Our Story

Journey Construction Group is a locally owned and operated full-service construction provider based near Grand Rapids, Michigan. The company was founded in 2017 with the purpose of partnering with clients from the beginning to end of their building projects to ensure delivery of high-quality results. We provide our clients with a clear picture and understanding of the journey through the construction process.

Jonathan VanEerden
Accounting & Finance

Jonathan has enjoyed a career in construction accounting for over eight years and loves being part of the Journey Construction team. He holds a Bachelor in accounting from the University of South Florida and is currently working toward his Certified Managerial Accountant designation.

He loves spending time with his wife and infant son, along with doing projects around the house, grilling, and reading.

Hunter King
Project Superintendent

Hunter takes his responsibility to the community seriously, not only as project superintendent with Journey Construction but also as a paid on-call firefighter and medical first responder in Jamestown township. 

When he’s not working, Hunter enjoys traveling with his wife, hunting, and watching Michigan football. 

William Jones
Project Superintendent

William has over 20 years of construction experience, including in welding, rigging, and equipment operation. He served in the United States military for six years from 2002-2008.
Now, William enjoys the outdoors, especially vacationing with his wife of over 20 years and their two children.

Michael Apostle
Business Development

Michael has been on the Journey Construction team since 2021 and has loved every moment. Before joining the team, he was a boys’ soccer coach for Mona Shores High School for 15 years. 

Outside of work, Michael enjoys traveling, hunting, golfing, and spending time with family and friends. 

Collin Jack King
Project Superintendent

Collin enjoys his role as project superintendent for Journey Construction. A graduate of Lansing Community College and with a CPR and life certification, Collin is always prepared and ready to serve his team to make every build a great one. 

In his spare time, Collin enjoys all things outdoors, including fishing, golfing, and sports. 

Jason DeFouw
Senior Project Manager

Jason has led a successful and productive construction career for over 10 years. He holds an engineering certificate from Kent Career Technical Center and is Procore certified.

Outside of work, Jason enjoys spending time on the water fishing, boating, and kayaking.

Brandon Hill
Project Superintendent

Brandon has been in construction for over 15 years, first as a carpenter and now as a project superintendent for Journey Construction. He holds a Bachelor of Science in construction management from Ferris State University and is OSHA, lift, and ProCore certified. 

In his spare time, Brandon enjoys spending time outdoors and quality time with his wife and their son.

Brandon Beyer
Project Manager

Brandon has an over 20-year career in the construction industry. He holds a Michigan Residential Builder’s License and is certified in mold remediation and fire and water damage restoration. 

When he’s not at work, Brandon enjoys spending time with his wife Sarah and their two children, Clara and George.

Holly Cole
Office Manager

Holly loves serving as office manager for Journey Construction after successfully owning her own insurance agency for 6 years. With her background in insurance, finance, and marketing, Holly keeps everything in Journey’s office running smoothly every day. 

Holly has two adult sons and enjoys spending time with them and her grandchildren. In her spare time, she enjoys exploring Michigan and finding new restaurants and places to hike. 

Don West
Project Superintendent

Don is a valued member of our Journey team, serving as project superintendent for many builds across the state. He appreciates the team atmosphere at Journey and is proud to be a part of it! 

Don’s previous work has earned him an Excellence in Construction award from Associated Builders and Contractors. When he’s not working, Don enjoys camping, exercising, and participating in strongman competitions.

Brent Balkema

Brent has more than 20 years of experience in the construction industry.  Starting in the trade as a carpenter, to working as a draftsman in an architectural firm, to director of preconstruction, to entrepreneur. 

Brent proudly serves the community he lives in as a board member on the Hudsonville Education Foundation and has been involved with other organizations & boards in the past. While not trying to solve all of the world’s problems, Brent enjoys spending time with his family, barbequing, and traveling to see all that there is in this big world of ours.
